The recipe
Ingredients (serves 12)
- 1 gallon apple cider
- 1 cup orange juice (fresh)
- 1/2 cup pineapple juice
- 1/4 cup lemon juice
- 1/4 cup honey or brown sugar
- 4 cinnamon sticks
- 8 whole cloves
- 4 whole star anise
- 1 whole nutmeg (cracked)
- 1 fresh orange (sliced)
- 1 fresh lemon (sliced)
- 2 cups rum or brandy (optional adult version)
Method
Slow cooker (easiest):
- Combine all ingredients in slow cooker
- Heat on low 2-4 hours
- Strain spices before serving
- Keep warm on "warm" setting
Stovetop:
- Combine in large pot
- Bring to simmer (not boil)
- Reduce heat, simmer 30 minutes
- Strain whole spices
- Add alcohol if using (just before serving)
