Glögg is the iconic Scandinavian Christmas mulled wine — spiced, sweet, with almonds and raisins floating. Family ritual served at Christmas markets and homes alike.
The recipe
Ingredients (serves 8)
- 1 bottle (750ml) dry red wine
- 1 cup port wine (or sweet red wine)
- 1 cup vodka or aquavit (traditional)
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 6 cinnamon sticks
- 8 whole cloves
- 6 cardamom pods, crushed
- 1 piece fresh ginger (1 inch), sliced
- Zest of 1 orange (peel only, no white)
- Zest of 1 lemon
- 1/2 cup blanched almonds
- 1/2 cup raisins (Sultana especially)
Method
Steep ahead (12 hours):
- In glass jar or bowl, combine vodka with all spices and citrus zest
- Cover, let infuse 12 hours at room temperature
- Strain into clean pot (discard whole spices and zest)
Heat to serve: 4. Add wine and port to spiced vodka 5. Heat gently to just simmer (don't boil!) 6. Add sugar, stir to dissolve 7. Add almonds and raisins 8. Heat 15 minutes (don't boil)
Serve: 9. Ladle into mugs with almonds and raisins 10. Each guest gets some fruit 11. Optional: drop additional spoon of vodka in each mug for adults
