Ingredients

  • 1 lb phyllo dough (thawed)
  • 1 lb butter (melted)
  • 1 lb walnuts or pistachios (finely chopped)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon cardamom

Syrup

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup honey
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 cloves
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F
  2. Mix nuts + cinnamon + cardamom
  3. Layer 8 phyllo sheets in 9x13 pan; butter each
  4. Sprinkle 1/3 nut mixture
  5. Layer 4 more phyllo sheets; butter each
  6. Sprinkle another 1/3 nuts
  7. Repeat with remaining nuts
  8. Top with 8 more phyllo sheets; butter each
  9. Cut into diamond shapes (before baking)
  10. Bake 50-60 minutes until golden
  11. Make syrup: simmer 10 minutes; strain
  12. Pour cooled syrup over hot baklava
  13. Rest 4+ hours (or overnight) for full absorption
