The classic recipe (1 9x13 pan)
Ingredients
- 1 lb phyllo dough (thawed)
- 1 lb butter (melted)
- 1 lb walnuts or pistachios (finely chopped)
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon cardamom
Syrup
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup honey
- 1 cup water
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 2 cloves
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
Method
- Preheat oven to 325°F
- Mix nuts + cinnamon + cardamom
- Layer 8 phyllo sheets in 9x13 pan; butter each
- Sprinkle 1/3 nut mixture
- Layer 4 more phyllo sheets; butter each
- Sprinkle another 1/3 nuts
- Repeat with remaining nuts
- Top with 8 more phyllo sheets; butter each
- Cut into diamond shapes (before baking)
- Bake 50-60 minutes until golden
- Make syrup: simmer 10 minutes; strain
- Pour cooled syrup over hot baklava
- Rest 4+ hours (or overnight) for full absorption
